Crisis in Cosmetics: Formulating to Survive the Endless Bans of Ingredients

There was a time when cosmetic scientists were entrusted with developing safe ingredients for topical products. Today, that responsibility is shared with federal governments, local governments and all manners of NGOs. The advent of social media has made even the layperson an opinionated expert on the safety of cosmetics and their ingredients. As a result, even an ingredient allowed by regulators can fall prey to public execution.

This begs the question: How does the cosmetics formulator of 2015 cope in this constantly changing environment, where what was safe yesterday is banned, restricted or condemned tomorrow? How do we find a path to a global formula where there is little harmonization in the regulations? And perhaps most importantly, how do we as an industry deal with the endless assault of junk science?

This workshop, presented by Robert Ross-Fichtner, of Focal Point Research, will cover selected topics of ingredient bans, demonstrate formulation strategies to cope with them, and discuss what we as an industry must do to protect our science, maintain access to critical ingredients, and finally, sustain and grow the confidence of our consumers.

Texture, Sensory Cues and More: Inventing a Product Experience

Thanks to an overwhelming response from 2014 attendees, Mark Chandler, of ACT Solutions Corp., returns for the 2015 C&T Summit to lead this hands-on workshop on approaches to create sensory experiences in personal care. The workshop will open with insights on the latest technologies used, as well as introduce some new ones. Attendees will be divided into groups to sample formulations and discuss aesthetics; then with each observation, Chandler will discuss the formulation approach used and why. Note that this workshop will focus on sensory in personal care, as it did in 2014; however, it is specifically designed not to repeat the same lessons as before, and it will reveal new insights.

Understanding the Marketing/R&D Junction

Back by popular demand from her 2014 C&T Summit appearance, Karen Young will once again discuss the roles of Marketing and R&D; where they intersect; and perhaps more importantly, how they do. She will explore the approaches that successful companies take to bypass obstacles and open communication between groups. She also will discuss new tools to encourage interaction and build community, to foster innovation. Note that while her 2014 workshop also focused on communication among product development groups, this edition is completely new and will shed light on ideas for improved team experiences.

How to Optimize Thickening in Water-based Personal Care Formulations

George Deckner and Tony O'Lenick return once again to the C&T Summit, this time to teach about thickening. No materials are more fundamental or important than thickeners for water-based personal care formulations. Thickeners are multi-functional, ubiquitous ingredients found in most formulations that can significantly impact stability and performance. Key benefits they provide include creating viscosity to improve product dispensability/functionality, stabilizing emulsions/foam, suspending solids, and improving the feel of skin or hair, product in-use attributes and product efficacy.

All thickeners function by binding or immobilizing water, and the key mechanisms involved include absorption, adsorption, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic repulsion and hydrophobe/hydrophobe interaction. The various types of thickening materials include synthetic and natural based polymers, colloidal structure-forming surfactants, and particles. Polymers are the most important class of these materials and are generally classified as being either water soluble or swellable; they also can be nonionic, anionic or cationic in nature.

This workshop will cover strategies for developing optimal thickening systems in all types of water-based formulations, including challenging environments such as extreme pH or high salt formulations.
